Grade 3 & 4
Term 2
Term 2
Welcome back to Term 2! The 3/4 teachers Mrs Preston, Mrs D’Amico, Ms Hasan, Mrs Evans and Mrs McKerracher wish all their students and families a happy term. We are looking forward to achieving many milestones with our learning this term!
Mathematics
Throughout the term, students will focus on the following topics in their Mathematics: revision of Place Value Addition and subtraction, with weekly warm-ups for Multiplication and Division to get students ready for Term 3. Towards the end of this term, students will also explore the mass and capacity of objects.
Reading
Students will continue to use their reading journals as a space for freely exploring and reflecting on their reading experiences. These journals allow them to "brain dump" all their ideas and thoughts, allowing them to record connections, questions, and wonders sparked by the text. Students can also jot down their favourite parts, summarise key events, and highlight lines or passages that resonate with them. This ongoing practice helps deepen their comprehension and encourages personal engagement with the material, fostering a stronger connection to the stories and themes they encounter.
Writing
Information & Poetry
Students will learn how to write an information report by understanding its structure and purpose. They'll explore how to gather factual information on a specific topic, organise it into clear sections, and present it.
Students will also learn how to write different types of poetry by exploring various poetic forms. They'll experiment with rhythm, rhyme, and imagery while focusing on the unique structures and techniques that each form requires to express creative ideas effectively.
Spelling & Word Knowledge
Strategies will be developed to assist in improving spelling skills. Students will participate in a weekly spelling focus each week to support and further their phonics knowledge.
This term, word structures and a focus on high-frequency words from various wordlists will be used. Students will investigate and explore different letter patterns and rules, strengthening strategies they can draw on when spelling unfamiliar words.
Integrated Studies
In our Integrated Topic, children will explore the concept of Geographic Sustainability by investigating how human actions impact the environment and the world around us. They will focus on key areas such as sustainability, pollution, littering, energy conservation, and animal protection. Through hands-on activities and discussions, students will learn how these issues are interconnected and how their choices can contribute to a more sustainable planet.
Other information
-
Students are encouraged to bring fresh fruit or vegetables to eat during the morning session and to have clean, fresh water in their drink bottles every day.
-
We look forward to your continued support with homework again this term. Please continue to encourage your child to read for at least 30 minutes per night, and that they record this in their home reader. Journals need to come to school with your child daily. Homework will be set on Wednesdays and due the following Monday. It will include a range of Mathletics & Literacy Planet tasks, where students can practice the skills they learned in class.
We encourage children to change their home readers weekly from our school borrowing system. However, we allow children to read their reading material if they fit.
-
Please make sure that your child has their school hat with them every day and that they are clearly labelled with their name. Hats must be worn outside from September until the end of April. No Hat, No Play! It is also important that they apply sunscreen before school and they are encouraged to bring sunscreen to apply throughout the day.
-
With the colder weather approaching, please provide your classroom teacher with a box of tissues and some antibacterial wipes. Encourage students to dress warmly over the coming months.
